You aren't the only one who can handle pain. Other people can, too - including him.
Life is pain. Its also love and happiness and sadness - but it does include pain. Ending something that makes you miserable is not "hurting someone." Its making it better for both of you. You can't sit around wasting your life waiting for someone else to figure out they don't want you. There's nothing noble about hurting and hurting and hurting just to be the martyr so he is spared some hurt. If he loves you, then he doesn't want you hurt either - he will want you happy. It will hurt both of you - but you will both get over it (believe it or not).
Get on with things - get on with your life and let him get on with his. Find yourselves. Figure out what you want and how to get it - and let him do the same. Love yourself - and him - enough to do what is best for both of you, whatever that is.
But stop beating yourself up. You want a list of your faults? Ok - here it is: 1) you gossip about people 2) you lie all the time 3) you cheat on your tests 4) you kick puppies 5) you drown kittens 6) you hit children 7) you insult and berate other people just to make yourself feel better 8) you shoplift 9) you forget to brush your teeth 10) you wandered once
Oh, wait - only one of those is true. Guess you aren't as shitty a person as you think you are.
People make mistakes. Sometimes they make the same mistakes over and over and over again. But that doesn't make them crappy. People are human - and they do the best they can.
